IPSO in the MOJO Magazines;

There has been a gigantic fall in the magazine sales over the past 10 years due to social media and no longer being a need to read a paper magazine for the newest topics as social media is much quicker and easily accessible than having to go out and buy a magazine; however, due to the news being so easy to watch now, there have been new subscriptions released, causing less and less readers in magazines through out the months.

Companies can cope with the unfortunate downfall in readers by going onto social media as most people are now online. So instead, they publish their magazines online for people to buy them online rather  than going out to go buy one. However, they still sell some of the paper magazines in small petrol stations, shops and newspaper companies.

Rock

The genre of rock has been around since even the 1940's. Electing Elvis Presley as the 'King of Rock & Roll', since around 1956. Rock is becoming less common to listen to, in newer artists especially.

Pop

Pop has become more popular since when it started back in 1950's when it begun. Pop is more popular on main stream music sites, and is more common as more people sing this genre, making it more current than other music genre's in younger people especially. Artists like Lana-Del Ray, Adele, Ariana Grande, and The Weeknd, who are more recent than Michael Jackson, and Queen, who are considered older pop music, however, is still listened to just as much as newer music artists.

Country has been a big genre, especially in America, since the 1920's. Most country bands are singular artists, and their guitars. Country was and still is a big part of the music culture in most parts of America, singers like Taylor Swift, who started her country song career at age 14, in the year 2004. Making this genre more relevant, across the globe as more and more people take up this artist style.

Cruel Summer

"Fever dream high in the quiet of the nightYou know that I caught itBad, bad boyShiny toy with a priceYou know that I bought it
Killing me slow, out the windowI'm always waiting for you to be waiting belowDevils roll the dice, angels roll their eyesWhat doesn't kill me makes me want you more
And it's new, the shape of your bodyIt's blue, the feeling I've gotAnd it's ooh, whoa, ohIt's a cruel summerIt's cool, that's what I tell 'emNo rules in breakable heavenBut ooh, whoa ohIt's a cruel summerWith you
Hang your head lowIn the glow of the vending machineI'm not dyingYou say that we'll just screw it up in these trying timesWe're not trying
So cut the headlights, summer's a knifeI'm always waiting for you just to cut to the boneDevils roll the dice, angels roll their eyesAnd if I bleed, you'll be the last to know
Oh, it's new, the shape of your bodyIt's blue, the feeling I've gotAnd it's ooh, whoa, ohIt's a cruel summerIt's cool, that's what I tell 'emNo rules in breakable heavenBut ooh, whoa, ohIt's a cruel summerWith you

As for country music, it is more popular in women then it is in men, breaking music stereotypes of country music being for middle aged white men in america, the percentage stats for country listeners lay as; Taylor Swift is seen as a feminine and rather over sexualised character in music. Which could be compared to pop as well as country music. She is wearing lots of make-up and has her hair done in most of her videos and live performances showing that she is a woman in the music industry, which is typically over-sexualised and fetishised.

- 48 % Male
-52% Female
-13% 18-26 years old
-17% 26-34 years old
- 18% 35-44 years old
- 20% 45-54 years old
-16% 55 + years old
- 26% of listeners and single and have never married.

This shows the variety in listeners of this type of music, meaning that younger people are listening to country just as people who are older are.

 Analysing Covers

Cover One; Kerrang

The genre is rock, you can tell this by the pose that is on the front cover of the chosen magazine. The Kerrang magazine front cover has been chosen for the dedicated target audience of 15-24 years old. Both genders are targeted however slightly more men get this magazine. The audience are normally, 'smart', compared to the normal people

L- Language
I - Industry
A - Audience
R - Representation

Representations

Media language - colour, typography, Text.
Represented as classic music with classical instruments and neutrals colours of white, cream, brown, black and the tiny hints of red. This reinforces a traditional element back into the magazine. The typography is a serif style with a hint of Script here and there for a more interesting yet still classic effect. The text is around the girl and includes praise to the musician, as well as her name, and then the producers of the magazine. The term 'brilliant,' shows her skill and makes it known she is great at playing music, the word, 'exciting,' shows she has a good future with what she is doing. The 'power of music,' shows that she is a powerful influence in the music and magazine industry especially to younger viewers who may grow up and look up to her for influence.

Audience

The audience is typically younger around 50% of the viewers are 15-34 years old, and as they get older the amount of people who listen to this decreases, bringing the percentage lower, 23% of people listening to it is 35-54 people, and 27% of people are 55+. There are 59% male audience and 41% female audience. The audience is the type of people who buy CDs but decide to stream anyways. They tend to enjoy live music performances, over pre-recorded ones.

Representation

The colour scheme is red, white, and black. The background is black to draw attention to the woman herself. The red stands out against the dark background. The medium long shot shows her to be wearing a oversized shirt and red lipstick, which is typically not the good girl go to for women in music like what was done with Nicola Benedetti. She wears red lipstick which helps her stand out, as red is seen as a 'promiscuous' colour especially in lipstick. The font is in serif and sans serif, which is a plain font to use and creates the theme of importance and purposefulness which can relate to the 'woman of the decade' cover line draped across her picture the plain outfit and the bright makeup draws attention to her face making it stand out against the plain magazine. This magazine opposes femininity which is typically pink or neutral with girlie poses and a cheesy smile, which taylor most certainly isn't portrayed as with hr stance and her clothes from mise-en-scene.

- Mise en scene; setting/costume/makeup/props

-Sound; diegetic, non-diegetic.

One way the music videos use media language to differentiate from each other is shown in the camera angles. The camera angles and shots in Avril Lavigne's song, 'Sk8r Boi.' The camera shots are more close up and purposely seem more immature compared to the narrative shots in Teenage Dirtbag, because it is taken from a movie. The music video, 'Sk8r Boi' has close-ups because she is singing and performing in the music video, whereas in Teenage Dirtbag it uses a narrative that cuts to the band every so often.

Radio Programmes produce target audiences; this is a selected group of people where they chose to play music that fits this target range. The BBC Live Lounge has a target audience, of young adults 15-29 years old. They have competitions which helps them gain more listeners because people want to get it for free. They have people sing live, they don't have a large range because the PSB fund Radio One, unlike heart who have the advertise for their listeners. The audience that Radio One Live Lounge

How can we tell that the target audience are a mix of both males and females from the media language used on this cover?

I can tell that target audience is male because it is a male music artist as Drake. However, the coverlines appeal to women because they feature women's names. On the other hand, the coverlines also appeal to men because they mention people like Chris Brown, who is more popular with men then he is women. The pose Drake is doing suggests he is trying to appeal to men, perhaps as an inspiration more then women, because compared to a Taylor Swift magazine, this inspires men more than women. The colours are more neutral, rather than being pink and purple or blue and green, which have gender stereotypes, this is yellow, black and white, which can appeal more approachable to women and men, than opposing gender stereotyped colours.

How can we tell that the target audience are educated and cultured from the media language used on this cover?

We can tell that the target audience are educated and cultured from the use of the violin, this is classical music, that obviously takes a lot of talent and skill to play. The masthead is a script title, it's traditional and elegant, representing higher class. The red colour of the font, its educated culture, represents love and passion, perhaps passion for the art. Targets an educated upper class audience, who enjoy classical music, which can be seen through the choice of terminology.

How can we tell that the target audience are interested in quality music from different decades from the media language used on this cover?

We can tell that the target audience are interested in quality music from different decades from the use of Madonna, who started her singing career in 1980. The cover lines have old artists, so they have an older music preference in comparison to s newer one. However, the artist Hozier is featured talking about Take me to church nearer the bottom.

MOJO U & G

2. BBC
3. A radio stations that benefits the public, publicly funded.
4. Convergence
5. Diversification
6. media conglomerate

Question Two
One way that  the music radio stations meet the requirements of public service broadcasting is for example, how BBC radio One live lounge meets their remit. They do this by doing things like, only speaking educationally; having live music. This can be shown through stormzy on live lounge, who sung live and also engaged in a conversation with the presenter, entertaining the target audience of 15-29 years old.

Music Video Question Two
One way that music videos create the representation of being different from one another is through gender stereotypes. In Skater Boy the main character, Avril Lavigne is portrayed more "masculine" than feminine, wearing baggy clothes, and not being dressed in stereotypical girlie clothes, like dresses and nicely done hair and make up. On the other hand, the main girl in Teenage dirtbag is dressed more girlie than Avril, creating a opposition in the gender stereotypes in each video, with the girl from Teenage dirtbag wearing skirts and cardigans with her hair done nicely with more delicate make  up where as Avril is wearing heavy punk makeup making her more grunge looking.

Do now;

The theory of uses and gratification, the use of personal identity has been used to make her seem more "dangerous",spoken about in the cover lines, as well as portrayed through her dark hair and heavy eyeliner, yet the clothes don't match her make up, suggesting she may not be who everyone thinks she is? The information given is talking about different artists and top stories, as well as a Steve Marriott album. Entertainment can be given through the free CD in the magazine, as well as multiple stories that are included in the cover lines, that can catch the viewers attention.

Q2: explain to ways that magazines attract their audiences. Refer to your knowledge of MOJO magazine to help you.

One way that MOJO magazines attract audiences is by using famous people that are likely to be known by the target audience, of older men. However, they do also have newer artists like; "Lana Del Rae." Another way that they attract an audience is by using current news stories and free gifts like CD's, which may attract people who are bored and are looking for new music and entertainment.

One way that music videos use media language to differ from one another is by using mise-en-scene. For example, Skater Boy opposes the same stereotypes that Teenage Dirtbag sets in place, by using outfits. This is shown when the girl in Teenage dirtbag wears skirts, and cardigans with her hair nicely pinned back, in comparison to Avril who wears baggy trousers, and a loose shirt in a dark greeny colour, with a loose tie, which can be seen as more masculine especially at the time this video was produced, as well as dark and heavy make up, compared to the TEENAGE dirtbag girls light and delicate make up. Avril sports black streaks in her plainly styled hair.

4.  Convergence  { What is it called when a company merges once separate media forms into one single entity?}
5. Diversification  {What is it called when a company branches out into different businesses?}
6. Conglomerate  {What sort of company is Baur Media?}

The BBC provides a wide range of content to accommodate the people of all ages, because old music wont meet the liking of a young teenager or adult, if it was targeted toward s an older target audience, this is because there are more people to please than the likes of a commercial radio.
However, they do promote more content towards the younger side of the age spectrum, for around 15 year olds. They do this through a number of ways, including revision tips for GCSE, and A-Level students, as well as live music from people like STORMZ, and other trending artists of this decade.
Which of course would not appeal to many older people from around 29+ who probably have never even heard of him. A large requirement of the BBC is to meet their remit, they have to do this because they are funded millions a year per radio stations from the government funded by the TV licence tax payers pay for.
A way they use their remit to do this is by supporting new artists like RAYE, playing live music which commercial radio stations cannot do, and they use speech that benefits more younger people than older, like talks about mental health and interacting with the audience and listeners, while using speech like Slang and words that wouldn't be as easy on the tongue for older people, as it would be for people between the ages 15-29 years old.
The live lounge have met the remit by having young interactive broadcasters who talk with slang and have live music playing often.

1. Media language is things like; mise-en-scene, sound, editing, camera/layout, font , colour , image.

2. Industry is the ownership and organisation of the media.

3. Audience is the people who tune in to read, listen to or watch something that is being shown to them, whether that be a magazine, a radio station or a tv show, or news station.

4. Representation is how things in media are shown through the various forms of media.

5. Context is the information surrounding something that has happened and why that something has happened, helping make something make more sense.

Q3: Explain how and why music videos create representations that are different from one another. refer to the one example of contrasting representations in two music videos you have studied to support your answer?

Teenage Dirtbag:
-Representations
-American high school

-Jocks; wearing football jersey's and jeans with slicked back hair, holding an american football with a wide stride to create the feeling of superiority inside the male character in his appearance, broad and stock, strong. Presented as popular and well respected, perhaps scaring people into it. Confident. Walk in the middle of the hallway in a triangle, strongest shape, in slow motion, in a long shot. Everyone scrambles out of their way to the lockers. Stereotypical of a jock in american high school.

-The popular girl; is wearing trendy clothes, a short skirt a high ponytail and a cardigan, seems quite innocent, walks with her head held high, perhaps too proud and full of herself, A skip in her walk. Seen as desirable almost as if she's a prize for others to win. Slo-mo shot of her, seemingly happy, naive. Used to emphasise her as importance. Not provocative, nice girl. She is dressed nicely yet still modestly.

-Loser; terrible winter hat, and fisher mans jacket. Lots of layers, outfit doesn't go well together. Clothes out of place with each-other as a metaphor of him amongst his peers. Books in his hands, sat on his own at lunch reading, no friends. The camera zooms out to isolate him everyone walking past him as if he doesn't exist. Only noticed when he is being bullied. Called a loser, the shot reversed shot of him interacting with people in the corridor and people calling him a loser. High angle shot to make him look submissive to his peers when he is laying on the floor, helpless, no one comes to help him. Everyone laughs at him.

Avril; baggy shirt, and loose tie. Long socks, and baggy jeans with a backwards cap. Tattoo on her upper arm, studded wrist cuffs heavy eyeliner, dark streaks in her blonde hair. Quick camera movements, following the beat of the music. Flicks between her the storyline and her band. Smashing up cars, jumping on cars and singing on cars. Biking through the abandoned building, breaking rules, and law. Rebellious, graffiti. Too many people in the back of the car. Clearly aiming to be defiant, reckless. Surrounded by boys, even though she is a girl. They listen to her, she is the leader, opposes gender stereotypes as the dominance of the respected friend group, listened to. Camera on her, everything revolves around her, focus on the graffiti.  Low angel shots, close up.s Looks like she is singing into the camera. She is in the middle not sexualised, she is in charge of them.

Q3: Explain how and why music videos create representations that are different from one another. refer to the one example of contrasting representations in two music videos you have studied to support your answer?

In Teenage dirtbag, clear representations are set in place from the characters. The jock is a stereotypical bully, and it is shown in the way he acts and dresses. For example the jock is dressed in a football jersey, and jeans, which seem kind of basic however this is exactly how he is stereotyped. His hair is slicked back and his fact is stoic. He created s the appearance for himself as dominant, and superior, immediately over-powering characters with his dominant stride and complete control. He conducts the crowds who hurry to the side s of the corridor as him and his jock friends decend down the corridor in a triangle formation, emphasising the fact he is stronger than other people because a triangle is the strongest shape. The shot is slow and long whenever he is on screen making him seem powerful to the audience.

On the other hand in Skater Boy, clear representations are set in place for the characters, ones that oppose those of Teenage dirtbag. Avril Lavigne is the one of is clearly in control taking the dominant role away from the jock, and opposing gender stereotypes  as she is a girl who has the power that is typically given to a man shown through the use of this exact opposing stereotype in teenage dirtbag when eh jock seems the most powerful of them all. She does this by wearing baggy clothes that are normally given to men such as baggy t-shirts and loose fitting jeans that don't show shape, which is unusual for a girl, especially one in this industry at the given time of 2002.

In Teenage Dirtbag, the representations set in place are clear, shown through the submissiveness of a loser. Showing the lack of control and friends and likeableness through the character of the loser.

The musician in Mojo Magazine is being presented as moody and quite mysterious. This is done by the classic look of someone who seems too unbothered by the camera as well as the white and black colour theme used on the entire magazine as a whole. The cover line  dark knight, shows that

The representations of age in the mojo magazine is being represented by an older male, who is seen as serious , confrontational, confident, and dangerous, this is shown by the way he is looking at the camera with a serious look like he in in control and no one should mess with him. His clothes are from the past showing he is classic and isn't afraid to do things he probably shouldn't. His clothes are dark and his hair is short and out of date, suggesting he is from the wrong ear, and his unhappy facial expression suggests he is not happy about it.

1. The layout is cluttered and un organised clearly targeted at young teenage girls who don't care about sophistication and neatness. The colour palette is coloured red, pink and purple which are very girlie colours.

2..The layout is orderly  and in line making it look neat and presentable. The layout connotes sophistication and matureness with a muted colour palette clearly aimed at older people . The choice of colour creates a sense of elegance and orderly formality. It is more traditional than the previous magazine.

Shot type; Medium Long-shot
Bands/artists mentioned; 8
Masthead; White Sans serif
Main cover lines = Pink and grey, white black sans serif.
Minor Cover lines; Small similar to main covr lines.
Placement top text: around sides and a little at the top
Genre Codes: music- the colours suggest rock band roll/ blues music this is supported by the Dance the blues CD on the front cover.
Puff; 2 types of pink white boxed shape 142 reviews and a free CD.

The colour palette is a soft pink, white and purple opening a feminine side to the magazine. However, the person on the front cover is a male celebrity, David Bowie. This may suggest that the magazine is trying to promote that men can also have a feminine side and that the colours don't mean anything other than what they are too look at, having no back story or negative "girlie" connotations and instead just being a normal colour that people can use without being harassed or labelled as something they are not, or have not asked to be called. This may suggest that Bowie himself did not care about the gender stereotypes of fashion and colour which divided the generation he was prominent into smaller more judgemental divisions. However, this may also suggest that he is fun-loving and energetic just like these colours are.

The main image differs from the mojo magazine's colour palette because the David Bowie magazine had bright colours and the Eugene magazine is more realistic with more natural pictures and colours in the background. He is dressed more blandly, in a black suit which is not like bowies outfit colours following through with the bright colour theme.

 Music Industry- Question Five

Lo; to explore the exam style question for music magazine and music video.

Media language:
-Text
-Images
-Cover lines
-Mast head
-Composition (layout)
-colour

Shot type; mid cshot . One person, female young, revealing clothes, gloves, gold head-dress.
Gold= wealth, power, royalty, goddess.
Colour pallete; gold, black yellow white - warm rich, almost intimidatingly powerful.
Layout, 4 over lines, formal and organised neatly.
Masthead; sans serif, lowercase, informal, relaxed, modern and clean, rule breaking, ( no capital on billboard title).

The media language is  contrasted against one another in the two  magazines. In the billboard magazine, the shot type is a mid-shot but in the mojo magazine is a long angle shot type which ,makes them look more powerful.

In billboard magazine, the colour palette is gold, black, yellow and white, creating a sense of rich warmth and an almost intimidating power sense.

On the other hand, in the MOJO magazine, there are very different uses of multiple bright colours, like red, and green and the outfits they dress in are toned down colours, whereas in billboard magazine, shakira is dressed in a black dress with gold accents, and a gold head-dress and throne in the background, with a  white wall in the very back helping neutralise this picture.

They layout of each magazine varies, for example, the billboard magazine has a more simple and less cluttered look to it, only four cover lines all of f to the side with the title fitting sleekly in-between the background an her herself. The colours meshing well together. Where as in the mojo magazine, the layout is completely  different with the white cover lines, with red and yellow highlights makes the mojo magazine look  messy and chaos.

In conclusion the media language the media language is different for each magazine, which is represented through the difference media language used in these two magazines. from MOJO and billboard.

Feedback Marking.
21/11- You have identified lots of key media language elements, T: 2. You need to explain further exactly what each element shows/reveals about the magazine audience, representation, content, or image.

The magazine featuring Beyonce, has a mid shit of one person  making the main focus her, and making her seem much more powerful. Whereas the four men on the Beatles magazine share the focus of a low angle shot type making them look powerful in a more subtle way. Beyonce is dressed is black and gold which are considered more historically modern colours, where as, the Beatles are dressed in colourful suits with patterned shirts and questionable outfits, which reflect the period they preformed in just as Beyonce's does. The gold accents make her seem royal and reflect the pattern that a throne would take, however, the background for the Beatles is just coloured splotches that have no characteristics at all.  The masthead on the two magazines are clearly different. Billboards use lower case letter and a sans serif kind of font .

The media language is used differently in the two magazine covers because of generic conventions of the magazine and the audience appeal. MOJO magazine, uses uppercase letters in the font of san serif which can be seen as a new and modern approach this is because the magazine can then be seen as a whole an informal magazine.
